Myth

A legend tells of Aeolus, a Greek prince, who ruled a colony on the Aeolian Islands. Being a perceptive man, he achieved a certain fame because he could predict the weather from the shape of the clouds of vapor that overhung an active volcano, probably Stromboli.

The inhabitants of the place were fishermen and knowledge of weather conditions was an important element of their daily life. So, probably, with the passing of generations the ability to predict events was confused with the ability to make them happen, it is not surprising then that in mythology we find Aeolus as the God of the wind. According to Greek mythology, Aeolus, God of the Winds, is the son of Poseidon and Arne and was given by Zeus the task of controlling the Winds. Aeolus directed them and freed them by guarding them inside caves and inside a wineskin in Lipari, one of the Aeolian Islands, where he had his palace.

The Winds, after having caused great damage including the detachment of Sicily from the continent, had to be kept under control. Among these were four brothers who represented the main Winds: Boreas, the most violent, North Wind who for the love of Dardanus' mares transformed himself into a horse and generated twelve foals as fast as the wind; Zephyr, West Wind, sweet and beneficial that announces spring; Euro, East Wind, sometimes stormy and sometimes dry that brought good weather; Austro, South Wind, very hot and bringer of rain always depicted wet.
