Myth

THE LEGEND OF POLYPHEMUS

The legend of the giant Polyphemus is told in Homer's Odyssey.

Ulysses, after losing his way back to Itaca, arrives in the land of cyclops, disproportionate human figures with one eye.

Achilles, at the head of 12 men, decides to enter the cave of the cyclops, which in the meantime kept his flock at bay in the green valleys.

The Achei began to devour the large amount of food they found inside the cave, until the cyclops returned to its dwelling. Found the men sitting at his banquet, irate for looting, he designed two. So he locked the others in the cave.

Ulysses, meditating on revenge, offered as a gift the wine he had brought with him from the ship: Polyphemus gladly accepted the drink, enjoying it in large quantities. Now drunk, he asked Ulysses for his name, and he replied, "my name is Nobody." When the giant fell asleep, Ulysses avenged his companions by blinding him with a large glowing wooden beam.

Polyphemus cried like a madman and tried unsuccessfully to get some Acheus. Then he moved the large boulder that closed the entrance, sure Ulysses and his men would escape. These, however, bonded under the belly of the rams that came out as soon as Polyphemus moved the gigantic stone.

Ulysses and his companions ran fast to the ships that moored on the coast and when the other cyclops rushed to The Help of Polyphemus and asked who made his blinding he replied: "None, it was Nobody".

Given the ships taking off, the other cyclops explained to Polyphemus of Ulysses' flight. The cyclops, furious and red with anger, detached three large boulders from the ground and husped them out to sea, in a vain attempt to shoot down the Greek ships.

These three immense boulders, the faraglioni, have remained motionless and unchanged, still admirable today in the waters that bathe Aci Trezza.
